Description Title

Hello, and welcome to Wisson Hill Wines!

We are a brand new Bedfordshire based wine retailer, run by Nicola and Henry Wisson-Hill. Twenty odd years experience in the industry between us and lots of encouragement from loved ones have persuaded us to take the plunge and make a go of it as an indie seller.

We want to sell wines that we are excited about. We want our customers to get excited about these wines too.

How did we get here, then?

Two hitherto unintroduced colleagues in our roles as wine shop assistant managers, we met in the magnificent, picturesque, iconic vineyards of Chateauneuf-du-Pape in late 2016. (Actually, we met in Terminal 5 of Heathrow, 9 hours earlier, but that isn’t quite as romantic. Is it?) A friendly relationship blossomed in those early days based on a mutual love of exquisite wine from the Rhone Valley, Britpop cult heroes and classic British sitcoms. From this, modern love blossomed.

Years later, after numerous trips to vineyards, and wine fairs, and trade shows, and after the introduction of a cat into one of our lives and cricket into the other's, we got married and decided to do what all other naive, optimistic, dewy-eyed newlyweds do; start a wine business.

It's a rather intriguing time to start a business. Turbulent political and economical times abound. And then, presumably just for a laugh, the Prime Minister slaps more duty onto the price of wine to boot, too.

A lot of our high streets look like very low streets at the moment. Confidence is also at a bit of low right now, if you are a consumer (and, as we might find out, as a business owner too…). So why start a business now?

Having done our time working for a major wine retailer, we flirted with launching this fun little venture a couple of years ago but, after a bit of soul searching, probably lacked the conviction to do it. Having done our over-time, extra-time and penalties for the same employer, we made the decision, aided by a multitude of cheery, positive pull factors (‘You’ll never get this chance again, you know… ’) to go out and do it. So, we think the overarching answer here is; Why not?

So here we are.

Thank you for expressing an interest in our business. We look forward to sharing a glass with you soon. Cheers.

Through the Grapevine...

April Amblings

April is where the year really springs into life. Bounteous blossoms, and warmer weather herald the arrival of sunnier days ahead. The mowers and the barbecues are dusted down after a  well-earned winter’s rest in preparation for a busy few months ahead. Meanwhile, the start of the cricket season, the Grand National, the Masters, and the business end of both the football and rugby season all vie for attention across a bumper month of sport.

If you’re out pottering with the plants in the garden (Nicola) or in potty-mouthing at the sport on the telly (Henry), we have just the wines for you this month. The heavy reds and richer whites start to beat their retreat to the backs of the racks as lighter, fresher wines begin to come to the fore.

The WHW Selection Committee met last week for their semi-annual gathering. The premise is quite simple; we ask some good chums if we can pop round theirs and they help us drink our wine, in exchange for some excellent nibbles, delightful company and strong opinions (particularly by the arrival of the fourth bottle) on any prospective new wines. It is a winning combination and last week’s meeting has proved invaluable in helping to shape our spring and summer selection.  We are looking forward to presenting five new wines from a new supplier in the coming weeks - two reds, one white, one rose and our first orange wine.

Join us on Saturday 13th April at Woburn Sands Community Market, from 10am until 2pm where we will be selling a range of wines and cheeses, including some of our new lines. You can find us dodging the showers on the Memorial Green, where a warm welcome and a sample of something lovely await.

Think quintessential English village picture postcard scene, and nearby Eversholt would be somewhere near the top of the list. Green and pleasant woodland are a backdrop to the pub and the church in time-honoured close proximity at the top of the lane, while a princely cricket pitch and a faithful old pavilion take centre stage in the foreground. We are delighted to be at
Eversholt Cricket Club on Thursday 18th April for a tasting evening, where we will be presenting some delicious, loosely cricket themed wines along with some equally delicious cheeses (which have even less to do with cricket). Tickets are available on our website, with some of the proceeds from the ticket sales going to the club.

Nicola, in her role as head sommelier at Woburn Sands’s premier craft beer and wine venue, will be presenting a selection of wine and cheeses at
The Coal Hatch’s monthly event on Thursday 25th April from 7pm until 9pm. Tickets are available here, and some of the featured wines and cheeses on the evening will be handpicked from the Wisson Hill Wine range.
