Wine of the Week - Le Cayre Grenache
A slovenly Sunday evening… some terrible food, some indulgent telly and just the wine to match. The year’s first naughty pizza delivery saw the opportunity to get stuck into a few episodes of ‘The Night Manager’ with an appropriate, similarly brooding, similarly intense, similarly splendid red; Le Carré with Le Cayre? Well then, what's not to like?
The first needs no introduction. One of the last century’s (and part of this one’s) most revered and most important novelists and writers, John le Carré has written some of the greatest works of espionage fiction and introduced us to some of that genre’s greatest stories and characters. Le Carré’s work has been put to the big and small screen, which is where the second series of The Night Manager will bring even more enthusiasts for the great man’s writing
The second, we would recommend you acquaint yourself with, if you haven’t already. ‘Le Cayre’ by Château Grand Moulin is a Grenache from an independent family-run winemaker from Corbières. Established in the early 70s by Jean-Noël Bousquet, Château Grand Moulin features 250 plots across seven distinct terroirs, Le Cayre is one such plot of just four hectares on a pebbled terrace above the Orbieu River.
A Grenache that is as brooding, intense and complex as something from a le Carré novel. A vibrant red featuring notes of red berries and dark cherry, with herbal and black pepper, the palate brings black olives and ripe tannins to a rich, smooth deftly balanced wine. Absolutely splendid with the aforementioned, showing its ability to be enjoyed with other iconic wordsmiths' works, Le Cayre would make a great choice for Burns’ Night suppers at the weekend too.
