<image:title>Blog - Wine of the Week - Les Crus de Sud Lirac - There is a magnificent escapism in listening to sport on the radio, the skill of the commentator and summariser to deliver the listener into the heart of the action. The three Johns are the favourites at The Lavenders: Messrs Agnew, Hunt and Murray are masters of the commentary art and each transcend their individual sports to rank among true broadcasting greats.</image:title>
<image:caption>Away from the welcome return of the cricket, a recent opportunity to reconnect with our favourite wine region has brought further welcome escapism. The heart of the Southern Rhône valley is where we first met and holds a special place in our hearts. Gorgeous, fragrant, opulent reds and whites (with the odd fruity dash of rosé too) are the region’s signature in the domain of Grenaches red and white. Châteauneuf-du-Pape is the best known, of course, but Rhône crus like Gigondas, Vacqueyras and Rasteau to mention but a few also resonate with wine lovers the world over too. Lirac is one of the lesser known crus, so resultantly represents great value for the savvy wine buyer. One of the southernmost Rhône crus situated to the north west of Avignon, Lirac has been making wines for two thousand years but has been famous for this since its wines found favour in royal courts in the sixteenth century Europe. Afforded Côtes du Rhône status in 1947, the region produces on average two million litres of wine per year.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Wine of the Week - When Life Gives you Oranges… - We love a Tortilla. Not the soft, squidgy shop bought wrap that inevitably sticks to the inside of the packet from fridge burn, or indeed the crispy chip and dip version (although both merit a small place in our hearts too) but rather Tortilla de Patatas, or Spanish Omelette, to give it its rather ungainly moniker over here. Comprising eggs, potatoes, optional onion and salt and olive oil, served as Tapas or at breakfast, the Tortilla is a symbolic staple of Spanish cuisine and has been since the late 18th century, it is also well loved at The Lavenders too. Ever so slowly and meticulously cooked over heat before being served either warm or at room temperature, it is one of life’s great pleasures and, as we tend to enjoy this dish eaten al fresco, a barometer of the arrival of warmer weather.</image:title>
<image:caption>With temperatures nearly in the twenties, Nic made the first Tortilla of the season this week, and absolutely delicious it was, too. We opted for stove over barbeque on this occasion, as it’s still jolly cold past 3pm, but we are looking forward to, hopefully, many an evening outside with wine and Tortilla in the months ahead.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Wine of the Week - When Life Gives you Oranges… - One (but let’s face it, there are several) of our go-to wines for Tortilla is this favoured ‘Patio-pounder’; ‘When Life Gives You Oranges’. Made by the man behind Coquille de Fleur and the Big Belties (see previous blog), this is a brilliantly easy drinking way to get into orange wines and a juicy and refreshing glass of wine. A blend of Grenache Blanc, Viognier and Muscat, the grapes spend just five days macerating to preserve the aromas and flavours of the wine before the pressed grape juice is blended with free run juice to end the fermentation before a little ageing, then bottling. Oranges, stone fruit and herbaceous notes on the nose are carried through to the palate. While the acidity is refreshing and the mouthfeel nicely textured, the finish is rather intense and long.</image:title>
<image:caption>The Tortilla is served with fresh crusty bread (as well as other Tapas dishes too) and the sweet, crunchy red onions, ample seasoning and pan-perfect potatoes make for a great combination with the complexities and the freshness of the wine. Spanish food and French wine are two key components of one of our favourite meals here, now over to you, British weather…</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Wine of the Week - Laissez-Faire Fiano - Luckily, in Larry Cherubino, there are few finer pairs of hands in the winemaking business. An award winning producer many times over, Cherubino makes some of the very best wines that come out of his home state of Western Australia.</image:title>
<image:caption>Laissez Faire reflects his approach to wine making, with the emphasis on minimal intervention in the vineyard, allowing the grapes in harmony with the right combination of soil and climate to do their thing. Fiano grapes from the Great Southern region are hand picked and whole bunch pressed before partial fermentation in French oak and barrel ageing. The trademark Fiano bone dry finish is in evidence, so too the aforementioned oak ageing and the subtle toasty, spicy notes. Quince, lemon, peach and lemon curd are here too, while the wine’s acidity is lengthy, taut and textured. A delight to enjoy on its own, we threw together one of our favourite suppers to pair it with. Melted Golden Cenarth on a bed of oven baked tomatoes served with torn hunks of fresh, crusty bread.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - From Hérault to Hull - We really have been to Hull and back this week. A couple of days on the road and by rail visiting suppliers up and down the country swirling, sniffing and spitting our way to finding some excellent new wines for you to enjoy this year. At our suppliers in Yorkshire it was great to come face to face with the man behind so many of our best selling wines. ‘Monsieur Beltie’, or Frédéric Garrabou to give him his real name, is the man who makes the two Big Beltie wines as well as Coquille de Fleur among other great wines from the South of France. His company, LGI, produces a number of styles of wines from across France’s biggest wine producing region, the Languedoc-Roussillon, both in terms of volume of wine made there and its vast surface area. A region that produces different styles of wines from all sorts of different grape varieties, it could be said the Languedoc-Roussillon is something of a blank canvas for producers, unrestricted, in the most part, as to what and how they make their wines. LGI’s portfolio boasts an excellent selection of wines from across this region typifying just that.</image:title>
<image:caption>Fred himself comes from a family of winemakers and growing up in Limoux helping out in the vineyards as a youngster he followed in both his father’s and grandfather’s footsteps. His role at the company is as one of three head winemakers using his knowledge and expertise to create brilliant wines. An affable gentleman, it was a pleasure to spend some time in his company and talk shop with him as well as sampling some of his wines.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - The Six (or Seven) Nations of Wine & Cheese - In a bid to, borrowing heavily from Lord Reith here, educate, entertain and inform, we do like to throw a curveball or two into our tasting evenings. With the event’s sporting theme, it felt only right to bring out the orange at half time, so after our patrons had polished off their second wine and cheese pairing to bring the first half of the evening to a close, we opened the orange wine for some (more) refreshment. Georgia is the historical home of orange wine, indeed all wine, as modern winemaking has evolved from this part of the world. Orange wine (white wine with the skins left on and the bits left in during fermentation, to simplify) has been quite the fashionable drink among hipsters and wine aficionados looking for something a bit different over the last decade or so. Allowing the juice to have contact with more than just the grape’s skin gives orange wine all kinds of interesting flavours and textures. We weren’t quite sure how the crowd were going to take to it, but in classic Henry fashion he assured Nicola the punters would lap it up…</image:title>
<image:caption>From the southern slopes of the Caucasus mountains comes Bedoba’s Orange. Bedoba was established over a decade ago by veteran local winemaker Nugzar Ksovreli and Swiss entrepreneur Thierry Fontannaz who endeavoured to bottle the genius, the history and extraordinary sense of place of the Kakheti wine region. They set out to produce the country’s renowned Saperavi red wine but have diversified in recent years to white grapes too.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Tales from our Travels - Alicante - An early flight into Miguel Hernandez Airport, bleary and weary from our peregrination, and the bright lights and whistles and bells of the newly installed border gates (they might not be that new, we just haven't flown anywhere for quite some time), as we traipsed through a predominantly empty terminal building, the striking headline from a large poster caught our eye; ‘Welcome to Alicante: Home to the World’s Oldest Wine Region’. Now hang on a minute…</image:title>
<image:caption>This got us scratching our heads. According to the textbooks we’ve read, briefly summarising, the origins of wine are widely thought to be from Georgia several millennia ago. Then the Phoenicians, Greeks and the other usual suspects from Antiquity got hold of it, bringing wine through the Mediterranean before vitis vinifera was championed by the Romans and distributed to the empire and beyond. Medieval Anglo-French trade points to Gascony and Bordeaux as being the first recognised wine regions of note, at least to British understanding, but the Italians might have a different viewpoint on that. The Lucentum locals are resolute - we started it!</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Tales from our Travels - Alicante - In 1510, to be exact, the first actual legislation to outline a wine region, in this case the city of Alicante, was passed by Ferdinand, King of Aragon. This act was, essentially, a primitive precursor to an appellation or a PDO (Protected Designation of Origin) - an edict to guarantee the quality of the product from which it originates. Such was the high standard of the local vino, Ferdinand would not accept any imitations, limiting the amount of wine going out and coming into the city. The snappily titled “Junta d’Inhibició del Vi Foraster d’Alacant”, or JIVFA for short, evolved over the centuries to be replaced by current legislation under the Alicante PDO.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Tales from our Travels - Alicante - Alicante has a rich winemaking history, with the fabled 'Fondillón' predating Europe’s other better known fortified wines. Made with the region’s most famous grape variety, Monastrell, the wine is aged for 10 years without fortification or intervention in oak barrels before release. It is a dessert wine of great richness and complexity - no wonder Ferdinand was so keen to keep hold of it. Although we couldn’t persuade any of the friendly local waiters or bartenders to open a bottle for us to taste, we managed to try several other local wines, most of which were really impressive, and most of which, sadly, you can’t buy easily over here. Happily, though, there is one we are more than glad to recommend… Al-Muvedre Monastrell’s name hints at what most of us know the grape as best - Mourvedre. Although established as a staple variety in France, Australia (where it's known as Mataro) and beyond, Mourvedre traces its roots back to the ancient winemaking region of Alicante where it thrives in the warm climes and mountainous elevations. Al-Muvedre is the work of visionary winemaker Telmo Rodriguez, and he has brought his genius to bear in the production of this fabulous red.</image:title>
<image:caption>This is classic Mediterranean Monastrell - vibrant black fruit, spice and earthiness. Blackberry and tea greet the nose, while the palate exhibits juicy autumn fruits, bright acidity, soft tannins and a smooth, lengthy finish.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Wine of the Week - Pipoli Greco di Tufo/Fiano - It is a privilege to be asked each time, and we are always very grateful to our hosts. We have honed our technique over the last couple of years to make our approach to tasting more businesslike, as the temptation to get carried away is all too great.</image:title>
<image:caption>On this visit, our brief was to acquire more white wine for warmer days so we passed up the opportunity, unlike our good friends who accompanied us, to really get amongst the toppier Bordeauxs and Burgundies. In fact, we hardly sampled any French wine at all, such was our laser focus. We even skipped lunch.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Wine of the Week - Pipoli Greco di Tufo/Fiano - To give you a flavour of what’s to come, we are pleased to introduce you to our first wine from Basilicata, a historic, mountainous region in Italy’s deep South. Watch this space, as they say, for more details on the new arrivals in the next few months.</image:title>
<image:caption>Renowned for producing the earthy red variety, Aglianico, Basilicata makes light, fresh crisp whites too. And the ‘Pipoli’ is a great example of that. Featuring two of Italy’s most popular varieties in the blend Greco and Fiano, Pipoli has an inviting, floral nose with candied fruits and lemon sherbert on the palate. In essence, a taste of summer sun. And we could all do with some of that right now.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Wine of the Week - Le Cayre Grenache - A slovenly Sunday evening… some terrible food, some indulgent telly and just the wine to match. The year’s first naughty pizza delivery saw the opportunity to get stuck into a few episodes of ‘The Night Manager’ with an appropriate, similarly brooding, similarly intense, similarly splendid red; Le Carré with Le Cayre? Well then, what's not to like? The first needs no introduction. One of the last century’s (and part of this one’s) most revered and most important novelists and writers, John le Carré has written some of the greatest works of espionage fiction and introduced us to some of that genre’s greatest stories and characters. Le Carré’s work has been put to the big and small screen, which is where the second series of The Night Manager will bring even more enthusiasts for the great man’s writing</image:title>
<image:caption>The second, we would recommend you acquaint yourself with, if you haven’t already. ‘Le Cayre’ by Château Grand Moulin is a Grenache from an independent family-run winemaker from Corbières. Established in the early 70s by Jean-Noël Bousquet, Château Grand Moulin features 250 plots across seven distinct terroirs, Le Cayre is one such plot of just four hectares on a pebbled terrace above the Orbieu River. A Grenache that is as brooding, intense and complex as something from a le Carré novel. A vibrant red featuring notes of red berries and dark cherry, with herbal and black pepper, the palate brings black olives and ripe tannins to a rich, smooth deftly balanced wine. Absolutely splendid with the aforementioned, showing its ability to be enjoyed with other iconic wordsmiths' works, Le Cayre would make a great choice for Burns’ Night suppers at the weekend too.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Wine of the Week - Maison Chavin Zéro Pinot Noir - Mid January and the bleakest of the bleak of the midwinter. There’s nothing else for it - turn the heating up as much as you dare, hunker down with a book or a box set, and wait patiently for it to all blow over. A fireside red always adds extra balm to the haven of home but if you get through as much telly as we tend to at this time of year, the chances are you’ll be going through a few more glasses in the moment than you’d rather as well… Pinot Noir is, naturally, a house favourite here; light, easy-drinking and moreish. Although, arguably now is not the time to be bulldozing through your best Burgundy. A find from last year was the Maison Chavin ‘Zéro Pinot Noir’ which we’ve had the chance to re-discover recently.</image:title>
<image:caption>Maison Chavin was established in the Languedoc-Roussillon in 2010 by Mathilde Boulachin, a native of Champagne. Innovative and forward thinking, they have won awards and plaudits for their approach to winemaking, sustainability and entrepreneurial spirit. Chavin’s Pinot Noir is brilliant ruby in colour while on the nose there are delicate notes of raspberry and cherry to discover, as well as cinnamon and spice. Cherry and liquorice dominate a palate that is textured and supple, fresh and well balanced. A fabulous wine to go trawling through those festive episodes of our favourite quizzes with. A wine that’s light and easy going plus, to aid thought on those particularly difficult Starter-for Ten questions, it’s alcohol-free as well.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Happy New Year! - Non-alcoholic wine is on the agenda more this month than any other, although throughout the year we seem to be fielding more questions on this divisive drink. We will be focussing on a few of our non-alcoholic wines throughout January and we will start with our most popular.</image:title>
<image:caption>Luna de Murviedro is a brilliant sparkling wine from the wine producing juggernaut that is the Utiel-Requena region in Spain. Made by Bodegas Murviedro, who celebrate 100 years of winemaking next year, the Luna de Murviedro is one of the best non-alcoholic wines we’ve tasted. Made with a Tempranillo heavy blend of red grapes and charming rosé in colour, the wine is de-alcoholised using a technique that allows the original aromas and structure of the wine to shine. We entertained good friends over the weekend that have recently embarked on Dry January and enjoyed the Luna de Murviedro with Nicola’s Spanish Sunday feast. Strawberry and summer fruit flavours, a creamy mousse and a refreshing finish - this is a wine tailor made for tapas or as an aperitif. A sparkling wine for any fun occasion - and not just for January…</image:caption>

<image:caption>Where to start? Festive bubbles first up for us, to be savoured while cooking and enjoying the late breakfast. We could choose any of ours, to be honest, as we enjoy drinking them all. However, the newest kid on the block, Classic Cuvée from Domaine Evremond, is an elegant, delectable choice to begin Christmas. We’d been looking forward to trying this for ages and the estate’s first release promises more exciting Cuvées to come. Vibrant, refined, complex - another great example of English fizz.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Light and fresh - a great option with seafood or antipasti bites, the zippy Le Peewit is a splendid choice as a starter white. Sauvignon Gris is a mutation of the Sauvignon Blanc grape - lightly aromatic and delicate - and without as much vibrant gooseberry or tropical fruits as its better known namesake. The palate, meanwhile, is zingy and zesty with great acidity and a lengthy, refined finish.</image:caption>

<image:caption>A Galician wine with a Burgundian twist - we love our wines from the North West of Spain so were delighted to taste Virgen del Galia’s Regueirón Godello for the first time in late summer. 11 months ageing in new oak barrels and French foudres makes for a rich, rounded wine. Flavours of stone and citrus fruit and toasty oak notes add to the complexity of this delicious, rich white. An ideal pairing for turkey or other game or, as often happens at chez Lavenders, just the roasties and Yorkshire pud on their own…</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Wine of the Week - La Combe Pilate ‘Esteban’ Brut Nature - And to serve and savour with this plated or papered national treasure? In both our pre-enlightened ages a diet-coke or Irn-Bru (dandelion & burdock for Nic) would do. But having done the training, it transpires that despite centuries of distrust, disentanglement and sometimes outright hostility, nothing goes as well with this British foody staple as the terrific taste of fantastic French fizz (although English Sparkling Wine naturally more-than does the job too).</image:title>
<image:caption>Champagne is the obvious choice here, but we have been championing the country’s other sparkling wines for years. So for this week’s supper we paired fish and chips with one of the first wines from our range, La Combe Pilate ‘Esteban’, a sparkling Viognier from the Rhône. Declassified to a ‘Vin de France’ owing to the region’s winemaking legislation, the wine is made using the Méthode Ancestrale technique where the single fermentation takes place in the bottle. Viognier being such a deliciously rich, fragrant, flavoursome grape, no dosage (i.e. the addition of extra sugar solution) is used allowing the flavours to shine. Fresh and tangy with crisp acidity, it works brilliantly with the rich, fatty food. Awash with notes of citrus, spice, stone fruit and with a tasty saline finish, the ‘Esteban’ is a great choice as a food friendly fizz or an indulgent midweek treat.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Wine of the Week - Alasia Barbera, Piemonte - Deep ruby in colour (interestingly, historically it was known to add colour to Barolo and Barbaresco wines lacking in hue, and not entirely legitimately either…), Barbera’s other tasting trademarks are low levels of tannins and high levels of acidity, Barbera can produce styles ranging from cherry-led young and fresh wines, to sour-cherry and spice-rich, as well as, with careful barrel ageing, plummier, rounder wines too. Serve lightly chilled in summer, or enjoy at room temperature the rest of the year, Barbera is delightful when paired with an array of tomato-ey, cheesy Italian favourites.</image:title>
<image:caption>The Alasia Barbera is a bright, youthful, fruity red made from grapes grown across the producer’s vineyards near Monferrato in Asti. Aromas of plum and raspberry are followed up with notes of sour cherries and savoury, spicy characteristics, which makes it a rather popular choice at home at The Lavenders. Looking for inspiration for what to do with a couple of fridge-weary aubergines recently, a newly discovered Parmigiani recipe was crying out for a mate. Having initially added a healthy glug to the rich, bubbling tomato sauce during preparation, the rest of the bottle we enjoyed later with the dish itself!</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Wine of the Week - Domaine St Andre ‘Folie d’Ines’ Blanc</image:title>
<image:caption>As well as being our go-to recommendation for pairing with roast chicken, the Folie d’Ines is a great match for wholesome seasonal grub, like Henry’s take on Pan Haggerty, a potato and onion gratin that originates from the North East. The creaminess of the gratin and the strong nutty flavours from the Hafod Welsh Cheddar -also available on our website- pair superbly with the full bodied richness of the wine. Appropriately, given the time of year; ‘Hafod’ is the Welsh word that refers to the traditional changing of pastures for livestock, from summer to winter.</image:caption>
